RUZIZI TENTED LODGE OPENS TO THE PUBLIC

Construction of the new Ruzizi Tented Lodge commenced in January 2012 and was completed for opening in October 2012, representing a major achievement for Akagera. Although a well-proven concept elsewhere in Africa, this Tented Lodge is the first of its kind in Rwanda.

The Lodge was designed and built by park management with the assistance of locally employed builders and labourers. In line with responsible tourism principles, park management focused on filling the lodge with locally made items, with furniture such as the dining table and lounge chairs made by local cooperatives. Our goal was keeping money spent on the lodge in-country as much as possible. The wooden surfaces used for the bathroom counters and some of the outside tables were made in-house, not only supplying a natural feel, but a connection to the surrounding area in a broader sense.

The Lodge is entirely powered by solar energy with a solar hot water system. The lodge prides itself on being environmentally sensitive with raised walkways linking the tents and main buildings to ensure minimal impact on the environment surrounding the lodge.

With only 7 tents, a maximum of 14 guests, the Lodge is a quiet, intimate retreat. The ease and comfort of this type of luxury "camping” is certain to provide cherishable memories. A large deck with a fireplace sprawls under a shady fig tree overlooking Lake Ihema, where hippo, crocodile and even elephant and leopard have been seen- and sunrises and starry nights can be enjoyed. It is the perfect place to relax after a long day of sightseeing in the bush.

The Lodge was built as part of an integrated Tourism Development Plan to increase park revenue for the long-term sustainability of the Park. The money received from guests at Ruzizi Tented Lodge will go towards the protection and conservation of the park as a whole.
