Current Funders

African Parks is very grateful to all contributers for their continued support, from those who have made invaluable financial contributions, to those who have donated their time as volunteers.  It is not possible to mention all of those people and institutions by name, and some have asked to remain anonymous.  The following, listed by category of contribution, are individuals and/or organisations who have concluded agreements and or made contributions in 2011 and 2012.  Only contributions in excess of $25,000 are mentioned here.

STRATEGIC PARTNERS:

These funders constitute our core funding partners at either an institutional or a park level. They commit to African Parks on a multi-year basis and are contributing an annual amount of $500,000 or more to African Parks.


European Union

The European Union is an economic and political partnership between 27 countries. The EU is our strategic funding partner in Garamba, Zakouma and Odzala. The EU committed €5 million towards Garamba National Park in the DRC over the period 2009 - 2013 which equates to an annual contribution of €1.25 million. It further committed €6.9 million towards Zakouma National Park in Chad over the period 2011 - 2015 which equates to an annual contribution of €1.38 million and €5 million towards Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo over the period 2012 - 2017 which equates to an annual contribution of €1 million.


Stichting African Parks Foundation

Stichting African Parks Foundation (SAPF) is the proprietary funding body of African Parks. It is a charitable foundation established in the Netherlands, with the primary objective of ensuring the long term integrity of some of Africa's national parks. The bulk of funds available from SAPF were made available by Paul Fentener van Vlissingen who was an international businessman and philanthropist and was one of the founders of African Parks.  SAPF contributed $2.1 million in 2011 towards African Park's overhead costs and portfolio funding.


RAPAC - Réseau des Aires Protégées d'Afrique Centrale

RAPAC is the protected area network of Central Africa, an intergovernmental institution supported by the European Union. RAPAC supports Odzala with a contribution of €1.8 million for the period 2011 - 2013.


Adessium Foundation

The Adessium Foundation is a grantmaking foundation working towards the benefit of nature and society. Adessium Foundation contributed €1.05 million between 2010 - 2013 towards new project development, special projects and unanticipated events across the entire African Parks portfolio. A total of €337,000 was received during 2011.  In addition, Adessium is also a strategic funding partner in Liuwa Plain National Park to which it committed €600,000 in 2011.


African Parks' Endowment Fund

 

The African Parks Endowment Fund has a number of sub-accounts, each dedicated to a specific cause. Paul Fentener van Vlissingen posthumously donated €25 million towards the fund which generates approximately €625,000 for the annual overhead costs of African Parks.


WWF - The Netherlands (World Wide Fund for Nature)

The World Wide Fund for Nature is a global independent conservation organisation that work towards the protection of the diversity of life and the ecosystems that support them. WWF - The Netherlands provides financial support of €2 million over a 3 year period (2011 - 2014) which is committed to the core running costs of Liuwa Plain National Park, Bangweulu Wetlands and Odzala National Park.  This equates to a total annual commitment of €666,666.


Dutch Postcode Lottery


The Dutch Postcode Lottery is a Netherlands charitable lottery that supports 81 charity organisations worldwide. The Dutch Postcode Lottery has contributed €2.5 million for the period 2011 - 2015 for African Parks' portfolio funding. This relates to an annual contribution of €500,000. This contribution is not ear-marked for any specific project, allowing African Parks to allocate it where it is needed most.


Walton Family Foundation

 

The Walton Family Foundation (WFF) is a philanthropic organisation with a strong focus on conservation and biodiversity protection. The WFF donated a total of $2.5 million to Akagera National Park in Rwanda for the period 2010 - 2014. This relates to an annual contribution of $500,000.


Ms Sabine Plattner

Ms Sabine Plattner is an international business woman and philanthropist. Ms Plattner contributed $500,000 towards Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Republic of Congo in 2011, bridging a critical funding gap before institutional funding could be secured for the ongoing costs of managing Odzala-Kokoua National Park.


MAJOR DONORS

These institutions and individuals generously contribute more than $100,000 annually in funding to African Parks, substantially supporting our conservation work.


United Nations Development Programme - Global Environment Fund


The Global Environment Facility, through the United Nations Development Programme, committed $634,000 towards Bangweulu Wetland in Zambia for the period 2010 - 2011. A total of $330,000 was received during 2011.


Stichting DOEN


Stichting DOEN is a Netherlands based fund that supports sustainable, cultural and social development. African Parks enjoyed financial support from Stichting DOEN until African Parks became a direct beneficiary of the National Postcode Loterij.  In 2011 Stichting DOEN made a final allocation of €250,000 towards African Parks' portfolio funding.


Rwanda Development Board (RDB)

 

The Rwanda Development Board is African Parks' government partner in the management of Akagera National Park in Rwanda. Akagera is unique among the African Parks' portfolio of parks in that it is the only park where the government contributes financially to the management costs of the park. The RDB covers some salaries to the value of an annual amount of $250,000.

The RDB made a further contribution by constructing a 120km fence on the western boundary of Akagera. The project commenced in 2011 and is expected to be complete by 2012.


 

Liberty Wildlife Foundation

Liberty Wildlife Foundation is an organisation working towards the protection of wildlife and the continuity of conservation efforts through the involvement of local communities. Liberty Wildlife Foundation committed $100,000 toward the predator proofing of the perimeter fence in Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi in preparation for the reintroduction of leopards.


Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

WCS is an international conservation society founded in 1895.  They currently manage wild places across the world with about 500 field conservation projects in over 60 countries.  WCS support Zakouma National Park through the provision of an aircraft, a pilot and all aircraft maintenance and fuel valued at approximately $100,000.


DONORS

Our donors largely comprise individuals, family foundations and NGOs who have generously contributed an annual amount of $25,000 or more to the African Parks portfolio, or to one of our parks, since 2010.


Fundación Biodiversidad

The Fundación Biodiversidad contributed €63,840 towards Garamba National Park in 2012. This money will go towards the purchase of giraffe tracking collars and to support a community visitation programme.

Anna McWane Foundation

The Anna McWane Foundation committed $35,000 towards community projects in Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia and also funded the building of an airstrip to the value of $90,000.

Mr Paul Tudor Jones

Mr Tudor Jones contributed $75,000 towards Zakouma National Park in Chad in 2011 to cover the costs of aerial support, a critical element in the effort to stop large scale elephant poaching.

Ms Anne Hoijer

Ms Hoijer, a long standing friend of Majete Wildlife Reserve, contributed €53,000 towards the construction of an education centre and a day visitor's centre at Majete.

AMSCO - African Management Services Company

The African Management Services Company is a United Nations Project to provide expatriate managers and funded training to African Companies. AMSCO committed $69,549 towards training at Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Mr Robert-Jan van Ogtrop

Mr van Ogtrop, Chairman of African Parks and Stichting African Parks Foundation, makes an annual contribution of €25,000 to the African Parks portfolio.  This commitment is over the five year period 2011 - 2015.

Mr Piet Klaver

Mr Piet Klaver, a Board Member of Stichting African Parks Foundation, makes an annual contribution of €25,000 to the African Parks portfolio.  This commitment is over the five year period 2011 - 2015.

Mr Rene Hooft Graafland

Mr Hooft Graafland a Board Member of Stichting African Parks Foundation, makes an annual contribution of €25,000 to the African Parks portfolio.  This commitment is over the five year period 2011 - 2015.

Mr Frederick van Beuningen

Mr Van Beuningen a Board Member of Stichting African Parks Foundation, makes an annual contribution of €25,000 to the African Parks portfolio.  This commitment is over the five year period 2011 - 2015.

Ms Laetitia Smits Van Oyen

Ms Smits Van Oyen a Board Member of Stichting African Parks Foundation, makes an annual contribution of €25,000 to the African Parks portfolio.  This commitment is over the five year period 2011 - 2015.

APN Management, Staff and Friends

Members from African Parks' management team, members of staff and their friends combined their efforts to collectively contribute $30,000 towards the African Parks endowment fund.

Africom

Africom, a group of Dutch friends each contributes €25,000, the equivalent of an annual Board fee, towards the reintroduction of leopards into Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi.
