Ivan Schapira recently arrived in Garamba National Park to head a training programme in bio-construction methods. Ivan holds an MSc degree in Bio-construction and has completed a course in Sustainable Construction and Waste Recycling.

The concept of bio-construction seeks to connect the urban and natural environments and attempt to satisfy the needs of the people while using natural, sustainable and locally available building resources. It incorporates concepts such as natural regulation of light and temperature through orientation and insolation and uses environmentally low impact materials, such as straw and mud.

Ivan gained extensive experience in bio-construction for rural communities in Argentina and will be spending the next two months sharing his knowledge and expertise with the communities surrounding Garamba.
