In the wake of rising ivory prices and poaching pressure, Dr Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Founder and CEO of Save the Elephants, and a team of specialists gave testimony entitled Ivory and Insecurity: The Global Implications of Poaching in Africa before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations presided over by Senator John Kerry on 24 May 2012.
The testimony spoke of surging prices for wildlife products, organised transnational criminal networks, underfunded protection agencies and the urgency with which these issues need to be addressed. Zakouma National Park was specifically mentioned as one of the success stories in elephant protection.
We commend all involved for bringing this escalating crisis into the spotlight.
