Qualities

The job requires a person who can work in a remote area in an African village setting. It requires the ability to forecast resources, self-motivate, prioritise and delegate and a knowledge of, and/or interest in and sensitivity to local customs and cultural issues. Proven experience in tourism and marketing are also required.

Job overview

The volunteer will work with the Majete management team to develop a competitive tourism product and help with the planning and coordination of the different tourism operations at Majete. They will improve the marketing function of Majete to meet specified visitor number and park income targets as well as develop a coherent long term marketing strategy that aims to consolidate and expand both the existing market base and untapped market segments. They will liaise with tour operators and tourism related bodies within Malawi and overseas to help with the consolidation of this function. They will be responsible for all tourism and marketing information flows and literature development as well as providing information for the website and diversifying into other electronic media avenues. They will also be responsible for the administration and booking requirements of the tourism facilities. Main duties include:

1. Developing marketing strategies and tourism business plans

2. Maintaining the Majete information flow and provide news items and updates for the African Parks web site

3. Preparation of reports and quarterly news letters

4. Work with Tour Operators and Travel Trade partners to maximize tourism to Majete, including in bound, domestic and international tour operators, hotels, car hire companies, hotel marketing organizations, safari tour operators, educational operators and special interest groups

5. Work to increase measurable visitor numbers and tourism income according to pre determined targets

6. Assist with the planning of catering procurements

7. Hosting guests, preparation of bills and associated administration

Key measures and targets (specific deliverables must be quantified)

1. Developing a tourism development plan for Majete.

2. Developing a marketing strategy for Majete.

3. Maintaining the bookings schedule and answering the marketing telephone.

4. Submission of timely reports.

5. Assist with strategies to improve Majete tourism product.

Competences and capacities needed for the job

1. A relevant qualification related to tourism and marketing.

2. Extensive experience in tourism and marketing or administration fields.

3. Experience in working in operations in remote locations.

4. Familiarity and competency with computer packages such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

5. Ability to train staff and impart information.

8 Proven ability to work within a team.
