Travel & Directions

The distance from Kigali to Akagera is approximately 110km along good tar roads for most of the journey. Allow approximately 2.5 hours travel time. The last 28km to the park is dirt road and all roads within the park are dirt tracks. 4x4 vehicles are highly recommended, particularly in the wet season. To get to Akagera from Kigali City Centre take the road out of town towards the airport. 100m before the airport, turn left heading east towards Rwamagana. Pass through Rwamagana and continue towards Kayonza. At the roundabout in Kayonza, turn right. Continue on this road until reaching a Discentre fuel station on the left as you enter the town of Kabarondo. Directly after the fuel station take the left turn onto a dirt road. Follow this dirt road for approximately 15km until reaching a junction at Rwinkwavu. Akagera is signposted left. Continue for another 13kms until reaching the park gates.

Several tour operators in Kigali offer trips to Akagera National Park and drivers with private vehicles offer their services at some of the larger hotels in Kigali.
