Volunteering
African Parks is constantly growing its portfolio of parks or conducting special projects in its existing operations. As a result, from time to time, we recruit volunteers to help with busy periods, new projects, or research activities. If you want to apply your passion, skills, and talents to helping us protect an amazing collection of protected areas in Africa, keep monitoring this page for volunteering opportunities. African Parks is an equal opportunity employer and all applications will be considered.
As a general rule, African Parks employs volunteers on the following basis:
- The volunteer period will normally last between 3 and 12 months, depending on the nature of the project;
- Each Park Manager will determine his or her volunteer needs for the year and will deal directly with all applicants. African Parks head office in Johannesburg will only deal with volunteers for head office projects, and not those at a park level;
- Once a volunteer has been selected a short contract that covers the following will be signed: the duties of the volunteer, provision of accommodation and a living allowance by African Parks, access to transport, and travel / medical evacuation insurance. The volunteer will also be asked to declare that he or she understands the risks involved and is physically capable of performing the duties;
- As a general rule, the standard living allowance is US$250 per month and the volunteer will be required to cover his or her travel costs to and from the project (including international airfares);
- African Parks will organise and normally pay for the required visas for the volunteer;
- Upon completion of the volunteer period, an evaluation report will be completed by the volunteer and given to the Park Manager or head office.
