There are a number of ways that individuals and organisations can participate in the work of The African Parks Network.
Our approach is, as far as possible, to structure partnerships on an individual basis depending on both our partners' needs and the needs of a specific park. We encourage the active participation of our partners in the projects of their choice.
Possible mechanisms for becoming involved include the following:
- Become a primary financial partner in one or more parks by supporting the annual investment and operating costs, or part thereof, preferably on a long-term basis. These costs range from US$500,000 to US$1.5 million per annum depending on the park, its size, its complexity and the phase of its overall development with costs declining as income builds. Such partners are welcome to be involved in the actual management of the park by participating as a formal member of the Board of the project. Furthermore such individuals and organisations are permitted to build a facility for personal use in the park. Typical partners include wealthy philanthropists, foundations and multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors.
- Fund once-off projects in a park, for example wildlife reintroductions, fencing of a park, or building of schools. Typical partners include wealthy individuals, foundations and companies.
- Partner African Parks in the provision of technical support, for example research and monitoring in one or more parks. Typical partners would include the large conservation organisations and universities which have the necessary specialist skills.
- Assist with cost-offest programmes which reduce the annual operating costs of a park, whether this involves the provision of spare parts for vehicles, access to legal services, training of our staff, or hosting our web server. Typical partners include companies and individuals.
- Contributions by individuals to park endowment funds which assist with the long-term sustainability of a chosen park. Purchase of a private lease which involves a once-off, refundable commitment of US$500,000 to the park specific endowment fund and entitles the grantor to build a private, non-commercial facility in the park for use by family and friends. The interest on the endowment is used to support park operating costs. The number of leases is restricted to between four and seven per park, and the capital is returned at the end of African Parks' management contract.
- Participate in game translocation exercises. African Parks is involved in a number of game translocations required to restock the parks with founder populations of indigenous species. When possible, African Parks runs guest participation programmes which allow discerning visitors to be park of such unique experiences whilst also contributing to the park.
- Become an Honorary Warden - for between €2,500 and €10,000 per year, you can become an honorary warden of any one of our parks. Your donation will be used to support a whole range of activites in that particular park. In return, we'll acknowledge your donation by mail and on our website, and we'll add your name to our mailing list to receive regular updates and information about The African Parks Network's activities. In addition, should you decide to visit the park, we'll arrange a guided tour of the park complete with a game drive for you and a guest. At the end of your honorary warden year, we'll send you an update of the park's activities and achievements as well as a copy of that year's Annual Report.
- Sponsor a Scout - for between €500 and €2,500 per year, you can sponsor a scout in any one of our parks. Your donation will be used to help pay the scout's wages, equipment and training costs. In return, we'll acknowledge your donation by mail and on our website, and we'll add your name to our mailing list so you receive regular updates and information about The African Parks' Network's activities. In addition, we'll send you the park's Annual Report for the sponsorship year and we'll send you an update of the scouts' activities and achievements at the end of your sponsorship period.
We are a flexible, entrepreneurial organisation and are willing to consider other ideas and innovations that potential partners may have, especially where such partnerships benefit both parties.
