The Turing Foundation has donated a considerable amount of money to activities being carried out in our two Marine Parks in Sudan. The Turing Foundation was established in 2006 by Pieter Geelen using the wealth he acquired as co-founder of TomTom NV (the satellite navigation system), a company listed on the Dutch Stock Exchange.
In close cooperation with the Sudanese Government, African Parks has taken on management responsibility for two major marine national parks in Sudan – Dungonab Bay National Park and Sanganeb Atoll Marine National Park. The Turing Foundation has generously committed a total of €1 million to the parks over the next 5 years. Dungonab Bay Marine Park covers 800km² of coastal habitats, coral reefs and groups of islands in the Sudanese Red Sea. Sanganeb Atoll Marine National Park is only 6km² and the only atoll in the Red Sea with untouched coral reefs.
Through this donation, African Parks will be able to fund infrastructure investments which are very critical to the protection of coral reef ecosystems, dugongs, hammer sharks, manta rays, turtles and other unique fish and bird species. African Parks is very grateful to Turing for their donation and is looking forward to a constructive long-term partnership.
The African Parks Foundation is the first private sector park management institution in Africa. It manages parks in public-private partnerships with governments on a long term basis, by combining world class conservation practice with business expertise. African Parks currently manages and finances seven national parks in five African countries (Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan).
