Game census carried out at Liuwa Plain National Park PDF Print E-mail

In April 2009 the third game census since inception of the Liuwa Plain project was carried out. These counts were carried out in 2004, 2007 and now 2009. The areas covered included the entire Park as well as the surrounding Game Management Area adjacent the Park. The results show a consistent growth in most species, a tribute the hard work of the entire Liuwa Team. Without the consistent effort in the field these results would not have been possible.

An interesting feature of this year's survey was that the populations of species that are resident in the Park year round (Zebra and Tsessebe) grew faster than those of species such as Lechwe and Wildebeeste that actually spend some time outside of the Park. This indicates the importance of extending our realm of influence beyond the boundaries of the Park to the areas that are used seasonally by these species.

The results are as follows:

* Wildebeeste - 36.600
* Zebra - 4.911
* Tsessebe - 1.451
* Lechwe - 928
