Liuwa receives a buffalo bull from Luangwa Valley |

The liuwa Buffalo herd of 19 has now been augmented with an additional bull from the Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia. The year old bull was hand raised after it was abondoned by its' mother for reasons not known. Its' isolation from other buffalo allowed it to remain free of Foot and Mouth Disease. This status made it suitable for introduction to Liuwa as our herd remains free of this disease. The young bull, named Elton, was transferred from Mfuwe, Luangwa to Mongu by truck which took nearly two days of driving. The trip from Mongu to Kalabowas done by boat and the final leg into the Park was done by vehicle. The entire operation went smootly with no real problems encountered. Elton has settled well and is slowly being integrated into the herd. It is anticipated that, once properly integrated, the herd will slowly be released to allow them to become more familiar with the environment around their enclosure. They will be enclosed at night to keep them safe from predators. This will continue until such time that the herd is large enough to fend properly for itself.
