To Mark their 10th anniversary, the Rwandan Police Force are carrying out a variety of activities all over the country, over the period of a month, including a Road Safety Campaign, Community Policing week, Environment Protection week, school competitions, sporting events and Police Medical Services week highlighting HIV/AIDS prevention, malaria prevention and promoting blood donation.
In collaboration with Kayonza District and the Akagera Management Company, part of Police Environmental Protection Week was held at Akagera National Park. Over 1500 cadets, and supervising officers were deployed into the field in 2 groups to slash a 20 metre wide fire break along roads in the park. In one day, one group slashed 2500 meters between Kilimbari and teh Lake Hago junction while the second group slashed 2000 meters from Lake Birengero towards Rwisirabo.
Kayonza district contributed financially to the event providing the funding for transport, and the purchase of hundreds of slashers, machetes and axes. The Mayor of Kayonza made a speech in which he emphasized that creating fire breaks is a vital part of habitat management within the park, as well as being important in the community where in the dry season fires can easily get out of control and burn large areas of farming land and the collaboration between the park and the community was essential as fires often spread from one to the other.
