"Miss Environment Kalabo successfully held for the first time!"
World Environment Day (WED 2010) was celebrated in Kalabo on 5 June for the first time this year, and it was done in style!
Miss Environment 2010 - Cristabel Mwanamwambwa
African Parks Zambia sponsored the Miss Environment Beauty Pageant which was organised by a young group called "Kalabo-Envo-Watch". The theme for Kalabo was localised as "Many Species, One Planet, One Furture: Our Eyes On Liuwa".
The event drew mass crowds and applauded the efforts AP/ZAWA are doing to protect lIuwa and that the battle to conserve nature is not the sole responsibility of the Liuwa partnership but everyone in Kalabo.
These young cats had some mesmerising skills up their sleeves!
The event was complemented with other activities such as paddling competitions and live music performances by various local artists competitions and live music performances by variuos local artists while PA systems echoed on ecological issues such as climate change, deforestation and pollution.
The message was very clear "We all need to change the way we view the environment before it is too late".
The youth headed by the newly crowned Miss Environment Cristabel Mwanamwambwa and her princessess together with "Kalabo-Envo-Watch" have tasked themselves to relentlessly spread the word of environmental awareness to the locals around Kalabo. Some of these activities will involve collection of garbage, installation of garbage bins in strategic locations and hosting workshops on various environmental issues affecting Kalabo.
This was just a beginning and many more activities have already been proposed for the rest of the year. The youth of Kalabo have pledged not to consider WED as a day activities, but, a way of life from now on.
Way to go Kalabo!!!!
