The Majete project has proven to be an immense success since 2003 when the Government of Malawi entered into a 25-year public private partnership with African Parks for the rehabilitation, development and management of this once desolate reserve devoid of any animal life.

Majete has since been restocked with more than 2,550 animals including black rhino, lions and leopards. Majete is one of the only reserves in Malawi that has the Big Five and this is sure to attract many tourists. Through the years, as more and more animals were introduced, more tourists have visited the park and substantial revenue has been generated. In 2006, 315 tourists visited the park with many paying to be a part of the elephant introduction. This resulted in gross revenue of almost US$65,000. Almost 10 years later, the revenue has almost tripled as about 6000 tourists visited the park in 2012 resulting in almost US$230,000.

Developing the Majete tourism experience has led to a variety of accommodation available to suit all desires. This includes the solar-powered Majete Community Camp Site, where guests can pitch a tent on an open thatched platform under the stars. The Thawale Tented Lodge comprises luxurious chalets with a private veranda looking onto a floodlit waterhole that attracts a variety of wildlife. The Mkulumadzi Lodge is contemporary and luxury accommodation located on the lush riverbank at the confluence of the Mkulumadzi and Shire rivers.

Majete Wildlife Reserve and African Parks are extremely grateful to all those who have supported this project since its inception and those who continue to visit the majestic haven that is Majete.
