Barotse Royal Establishment

The Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE), or Litunga, is the monarchy of the Lozi ethnic group of western Zambia, inhabiting a region known as Barotseland. The title Litunga͛ means of the earth͛ or owner of the earth,͛ signifying that the BRE is caretaker of all the lands of the Lozi kingdom. The BRE is recognized by the Government of Zambia as an official administrative entity in Barotseland, and the two have cooperated to improve the enforcement of new, sustainable fishing regulations and reverse the serious decline in the economic health of Barotse fisheries.
