It is with sadness that we confirm the passing away of Mr Limbani Chidakwa, a Ranger in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in Malawi.

During a routine patrol on the evening of 21 September 2023, the ranger team encountered illegal fishermen in the vicinity of Muta Falls, near the Tongole Airstrip. In pursuit of these individuals, Mr Limbani Chidakwa jumped into the river and was swept under.

Despite all efforts to locate him and ensure his safe return, we are saddened to confirm that he passed away. Mr Chidakwa’s body was recovered, and his family was informed.

We are working closely with local authorities to locate the illegal fishermen, and the Government of Malawi and local communities to intensify our focus on safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Mr Limbani Chidakwa joined Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in 2018 and he was known for his humble character, hardworking spirit and attention to detail in his work. He is survived by his wife. We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

African Parks’ family support programme will be made available to Mr Chidakwa’s wife.
